Religion in the public sphere
Harriet Miers' nomination has sparked a lot of talk about the role of her religious beliefs in her judicial philosophy. The Washington Post story today typifies some of the "tour guide" approach much of the media takes to such issues. Gosh, the article suggests, aren't these people just plain odd? Look at their quaint views!

It seems to me that this is a symptom of a decline in respect for religion that makes it very difficult for public discussion of issues on which religious people are influenced by their faith to take place. That's bad.
